The
story of Buffseeds
Kieran
Scragg, singer-songwriter and mighty fine guitarist, started the
band with his cousin Joel, who moved to Devon where they shared
a flat, and later added Ella
to the line-up due to the bands old drummer leaving.
After
a series of gigs around Exeter, the band released 'Airborne' on
their own label Pixel Records in '99, which is already extremely
rare. Soon after, a friend of Kieran, Neil Reed, joined on keyboards.
An early version of 'Barricade' was played on Steve Lamacq's Evening
Session, and a radio plugger heard it and passed on a 4 track which
included Barricade, Who Stole the weekend, Ghost and Sparkle Me
to Daren Robson. Robson went to see the band play in Plymouth and
they talked about an E.P deal, but to the delight of the all involved,
an album deal was signed.
December
2001 saw the release of 'Casino' on Fantastic Plastic records as
a limited edition, to take the pressure off it charting. Thanks
to airplay from Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley, 'Casino' unexpectedly
charted at 87. The end of the year also brought with it a support
slot on The Mull Historical Society's tour, the highlight of which
being a gig at the Ulu, where the band played to 800 people, their
largest crowd to date.
'Barricade'
was decided as the second single to be released, and the band embarked
on a 14 date joint-headlining tour with Oxford band Goldrush to
support it.
Kieran
recently confirmed the album title as 'The Picture Show', which
was recorded late 2001 with Ian Caple (JJ72, Mansun, Tindersticks)
and Michael Brauer (Coldplay, New Radicals).
Kieran
explains:
"The
Picture Show sums up what all the songs are about....pictures...in
a show!
No,
its to do with the songs being stories. Sparkle Me is a true story.
All the people in that song exist and the lyrics revolve around
a period of my life during my A-levels. I try to right unusual pictures
with my lyrics, attempting to stay away from:
"babe
you are my life, I see you every night cause your skins as white,
as a kitchen knife" etc....
Cause
no one needs lyrics like that.
Martin
Luther King said:
"
Most of us will not have to repent of the great evils we have done,
but of the apathy that has prevented us from doing anything at all"
That's what Casino is about. And its a story. Which is why our albums
gonna be called The Picture Show. Mmmmm, me is waffling now, better
stop."
Barricade
received some fantastic reviews:
NME:
"One of the best singles of 2002"
The
Guardian:
"When playing live, the Buffseeds introduce this song as "a
song about people who think it's cool to throw pipe bombs at primary
school children". It aches with the soft spoken falsetto anger
and disgust that Robert Wyattgave to Shipbuilding. And praise comes
no higher. Should be compulsory listening in every school in Northern
Ireland. And India. And the Middle East. And indeed everywhere.
Although, naturally, the subversive humanity contained herein is
too dangerous to be taught to mere children"
Teletext:
"Kieran Scragg's vocals are precisely like JJ72, but their
melodies are more thoughtful than the Irish trio. Swirly, churning
and hellishly cute"
The
summer of 2002 was pretty quiet for the band, with their only gig
being at the Ashton Court festival.
Announcing
fan favorite 'Who Stole The Weekend' as the third single, Buffseeds
embarked on a 12 date tour to support it, starting at Aldershot
on the 5th of October and ending on the 24th in Wolverhmapton.
This
was the bands first proper headlining tour, and went fairly well,
apart from a couple of quiet nights, namely Sheffield, which Kieran
later described as a 'Glorified practice'. People sang along to
Casino and Barricade, and if they didn't know the words to those,
then Kieran made sure they had a chance to stretch their vocal chords
with the now classic cover of Genie in a Bottle.
My
body's saying no but my heart is saying let's go.
Ahem.
During
this time, Who Stole
was released, which charted lower than
the previous 2 singles, although still making the top 100.
The
Picture Show now looks likely to be out in January 2003.
